Description
Dress of black dyed cotton with heavy appliqué predominantly in braided cotton and silver thread. [AFS [OPS move] 31/7/2019]
Long description
Dress of black dyed cotton with heavy appliqué predominantly in braided cotton and silver thread. The braided cotton, in white, green, and red with silver thread, radiates from the neckline and the waistline, and forms a linear repetitive design in the centre of the front of the dress. Additional braided cotton sections decorate the wrists, and extend over the shoulders. A red and white stripe of braided cotton runs from the wrists up past the arm pits where it runs vertically from the mid point of each shoulder towards the hemline, mirrored on the reverse of the dress. Only the stripe on the left front connects to the hemline. The hem line is decorated with white cotton lace, silver thread and white and red cotton braids, the lace is backed with red and white cotton textile. An additional panel of black cotton has been added above the hem on the right, suggesting a repair. Three white cotton braided shapes extend from the neckline on the reverse of the dress. The neckline has been extended with a piece of ?synthetic red, green, white and yellow floral textile, and the inside of the reverse has been backed with the same red and white cotton as the hemline. The design along the hemline has frayed, there is a tear on the left shoulder, the braiding has broken in some areas, and staining can be seen on the reverse. [AFS [OPS move] 25/7/2019]
