Long description
Birch bark basket with quillwork decoration. The basket is part of a nest of three [see 2014.43.3 & .5 for the others]. The main body of the basket [.1] is made from an inner layer of birch bark with one band of vertical cane strips on the outside interwoven at spaced intervals with white porcupine quill decoration. The lid [.2] is constructed of birch bark with a band of vertical cane strips with the same quill decoration as the body of the basket. The lid is decorated with a geometric design of white, orange, black and blue dyed quills consisting of linear designs and triangles. The overall construction is stitched together with cane.
