The name Mangareva translates as ‘Manga’ (mountain) and ‘Reva’ (floating), or ‘floating mountain’. This is a reference to the higher peaks in the lagoon appearing to ‘float’ above the sea when approaching by boat because of the surrounding reefs and atolls. Information provided by James Flexner, University of Sydney.
