- Research and responses
This object was examined by Dr Elizabeth Graham, UCL, as part of the Fell funded project 'Characterizing the World Archaeology Collections of the PRM' in January 2010. She advised that this is a Mayan artefact; Late Classic or maybe even close to Terminal Classic (ca. A.D. 700-800) [AS 29/01/2010]
This object was later seen in December 2010 by Professor Rosemary Joyce during a visit to Oxford. She noted that in this part of Honduras the term Maya is not used to refer to groups here as these communities did not speak a Mayan language, rather they were speakers of 'Pech' ['Paya' in older literature]. These artefacts are local, not imports from the Mayan area. Rather these objects should be identified with the 'Bay Island Culture'. [AS 01/12/2010]
