Description
Socketed iron arrowhead with short leaf-shaped blade on a wooden shaft with decorated, bound and nocked end [RTS 6/6/2005].
Long description
Iron arrowhead with short, leaf-shaped blade with angular midrib running down the centre of each side and rounded shoulders, on a long solid tang, hammered to be almost circular in section then ending in a socketed base with a seam running up one side. This has been fitted onto the top of a shaft carved from a lightweight yellow wood (Pantone 7509C) with a concave notch cut across the end to create a shallow nocked butt. There is a narrow strip of plant fibre binding around the shaft 40 mm above the nock, with traces of pink staining that may be the remains of a fixative (Pantone 4705C). This is loose and appears to have slipped up the shaft; faint markings just above the nock suggest this was its original position. The lower part of the shaft has been decorated with what may be an owner's marking, consisting of a band of incised cross-hatching, inlaid with black material, possibly soot or charcoal. The arrow is complete and intact; the shaft is discoloured with gray to black material in patches over its surface. It has a weight of 76.2 grams and a total length of 1066 mm. The arrowhead is 193 mm long, with the blade portion being 51 mm long, 17.3 mm wide and 3.5 mm thick at the centre, while the socket has a diameter of 9.5 mm. The visible portion of the shaft is 873 mm long, with a body diameter of 8 mm and a nock length of 2 mm; the fibre binding is 7 mm long [RTS 6/6/2005]
