This object was examined by Adrienne Kaeppler, Smithsonian Institute, on 13-14 June 2013. She noted that i'e kuku is the Hawaiian name for tapa beater. The word hoopai is the name for the straight grooved design. Maka u ena is the name of the grooved design - fish net design. This beater has remains of tapa on one side and shows marks from use.
