Description
Woman's rectangular shawl
Long description
Woman's rectangular shawl made from two complete textiles stitched together edge to edge, with the terminal areas at opposite ends of the garment. Each textile has a dark brown ground of warp-faced plain weave, bordered with pink and yellow warp stripes and narrow bands of complementary warp patterning ('pebble weave') in white, pink and yellow. Designs include birds and chevrons. One outer border of the shawl is pink, the other yellow: both incorporate lluq'i (backward spun) yarn, giving a subtle herringbone effect. This has a protective function in some areas (Meisch 1986:249-250); used in the selvage it can also help a garment to lie flat (Meisch 1997: 41). Dark brown weft. Probably natural dyes. Probably alpaca. Warp spin Z2S, S2Z; complementary warp Z2S; weft Z2S; warp count 80 epi (32/cm); weft count 22 ppi (9/cm).
