Description
Basketry and beadwork purse.
Long description
Basketry and beadwork purse. The main body of the purse is of finely woven basketry. It is woven in stripes of red/brown, plain and black. There is a rectangular beadwork flap attached to one side of the upper edge of the basketry purse. This acts as a cover. The beadwork is made up of blue, green, yellow, red and white beads woven in a geometrical pattern. As an edge to the beadwork flap there are seven coins attached with small beadwork loops. These are partly decorative but would also act as weights to keep the flap down over the purse and the purse closed. The coins are East African 1 cent pieces dated 1925 (George V), 1928 (George V), 1952 (Elizabeth II), 1955 (Elizabeth II), 1956 (Elizabeth II), 1957 (Elizabeth II) and 1959 (Elizabeth II).
