- Research and responses
It is possible that this object was collected by EH Man. It is not stated in any of the primary sources which object [and where it was] the boat was modelled on. It was presumably used as example of a missing link in one of the series [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]

1884.54.55.1Model of a dugout canoe. Carved from a single curved piece of wood and decorated with red coloured resin that has been painted in the pattern of stitching along the edges, on the interior and on the underside of the boat. These are areas where traditionally the boat would have been stitched. Five supports going horizontally across the boat, two of which have plant fibre and reed tied around them for support. At one end of the boat is a length of plaited rope, which is secured to the boat. At the long thin end of the boat are a row of cockle shells on the underside of the boat suspended by plant fibre string. See 1884.54.55 .1 - .9 for the other associated parts.
