The inscription on this object was transcribed and translated by Fusa McLynn who volunteered at the Museum in 2013 as: (Centre) “Jigenji shujo Fukujukai muryo”, a passage from Kannon-kyo, meaning Kannon watches over all the living creatures with tender care, and if we would try to live in the same way, we would get a vast ocean of happiness. (Sides) “Kinryu-zan Senso-ji”, Senso-ji temple at Kinryu-zan . [FB 12/03/2015]

1968.20.187Ivory tobacco box with leather cap and leather amulet attached by a chain. The tobacco container has a globular base with short cylindrical neck. There is a small red, white and blue bead decorated knob extending from the base. The opening of the container is covered with a plain leather cap. There is a long metal chain attached to the side of the lid and the ivory snuff container at two points. The end of the chain have bead decoration.
