Research and responses

Canon Greenwell excavated fifteen Barrows in and around the civil parish of Ganton, of these seven were located on Ganton Wold [SE 994 757]. Greenwell published the results of his barrow excavations in an 1877 book co-written with George Rolleston [this book can be accessed online at http://www.archive.org/details/britishbarrowsre00greeuoft]. The Ganton barrows are described on pages 155 - 179, with those on the Wold being divided geographically into three groups. The first group comprised no's. 24 [pp 169], 25 [pp 170] and 26 [pp 171]; the second no's. 27 [pp 173] and 28 [pp 175]; the third no's. 29 [pp 178] and 30 [pp 179]. All these barrows appear to have been excavated in 1867.Unfortunately it is not currently known from which of these seven barrows this object was recovered. Full reference: Greenwell, W and Rolleston, G. 1877. British barrows: A record of the examination of sepulchral mounds in various parts of England . Oxford: Clarendon Press. [MN 23/06/2009]

The barrows listed above are all recorded on the English Heritage maintained National Monuments Record. Listed here are the barrows followed by the NMR monument number and the grid reference in square brackets; 24 - 79735 [TA 0059 7552]; 25 - 79738 [TA 0069 7559]; 26 - 79741 [TA 0069 7566]; 27 - 79744 [TA 0029 7603]; 28 - 79765 [TA 00 76]; 29 - 79750 [TA 0033 7619]; 30 - 79753 [TA 0043 7620]. These records can be accessed online at http://pastscape.english-heritage.org.uk. Please note that Greenwell barrows 24 - 26 are not located in the civil parish of Ganton, but in Willerby. The PRM holds a large number of stone artefacts collected by Lane Fox at Ganton Wold in April 1867. I have therefore updated the 'when collected' field for this object to 'April 1967?'. [Dan Hicks 06/09/2012]
