Paper charm with characters written in black ink and square stamp in red ink. The paper is folded with a red ink stamp over the flap. The paper seal has been opened. An amulet for protection from fire. [MJD 07/01/2013]

Research and responses

The inscription on this object was transcribed and translated by Fusa McLynn who volunteered at the Museum in 2013 as: (In red) “Doryo shinzen”, In front of Doryo. “Kabo Saijo-ji”, Protection from fire, Saijo-ji temple. (Reverse side) A red seal in a shape of a leaf of fatsia (yatsude), which is believed to be a magical fan used by tengu, a long-nosed goblin. According to a legend, When Saijo-ji temple was founded in 1394, one of the monks called Doryo became a goblin to protect the temple. [MJD 22/02/2013]
