Long description
Festival appliqué apron [part of a festival costume comprising head-dress [.1], apron [.2] and skirt [.3]]. The apron is made from a base cloth of cotton dyed navy blue. The front of the apron has been decorated with appliqué. The edge of the apron, along both sides and the bottom of the skirt, have been edges with bright blue cotton textile approximately 55 mm wide, hand stitched with white cotton yarn. the central panel of the apron is made from black silk textile and is approximately 325 mm wide by 240 mm long. The edges of this panel have braid sewn onto it. There is a braid woven in green, pink and blue, approximately 27 mm wide and a braid consisting of red and white cotton approximately 5 mm wide. the part of the apron which covers the chest area is decorated with an appliqué floral motif. The flowers are made from pieces of brightly coloured silk textile edges with metal foil embroidery on a red background. Above this panel of appliqué decoration is a smaller panel of embroidered flowers in in pink, green, blue and yellow on a white felted background. This part of the apron is edges with bright blue, black and white cotton textile stitched with six zig-zag lines in red, yellow and green cotton yarn with metallic cotton yarn. The neck tie of the apron is made from a length of pink ribbon embroidered with red and gold flowers and hand stitched with white cotton yarn to the top of the apron at either end. The waist ties fro the apron are made from white cotton textile with two bands of embroidered geometric pattern in grey cotton yarn at the bottom of each tie. Each tie is finished to a point and have been decorated with a piece of appliquéd black cotton textile with red and yellow cotton edges on one tie and purple and blue cotton edging on the other. On the tie with red and yellow edging the dye has run and caused pink/orange staining around the area of appliqué. Both sides of the both ties have been decorated. [FC 14/06/2010]
