Description
Festival neckband embroidered in cross stitch. [FC 08/06/2010]
Long description
Festival neckband embroidered in cross stitch. The neckband is made from a base cloth of cotton dyed indigo in several square and rectangular embroidered panels that have been stitched together. The central rectangular panel running down the centre of the neckband has a slit in the centre so that the wearer can place their head through to wear the neckband. It is made from several pieces of cotton textile and in its totality is approximately 450 mm long and 135 mm wide. The central slit is is approximately 20 mm wide and the cotton on either side of the slit has been edged with an embroidered boarder approximately 28 mm wide consisting of red flowers with green and yellow foliage on a pink background. This floral design has been embroidered with silk yarn in satin stitch with the background in pink silk yarn in satin stitch with needle weaving. This decorative boarder has been hand stitched to the black cotton with cross stitches in yellow cotton yarn. At the top of the central panel is square of embroidery approximately 135 mm wide by 135 mm long. Two edges have been edged with a boarder of pink silk textile approximately 12 mm wide. A design of geometric shapes has been embroidered with white cotton yarn in very fine cross and associated stitches in the centre with a red and yellow boarder embroidered in cotton yarn. Outside of this central square are two further boarders in red and white cotton textile and a further boarder embroidered in very fine cross stitch in yellow, red and green cotton yarn. Along the bottom is a design of five and a half 'stars' embroidered in yellow, red and green cotton yarn in satin stitch. At the bottom of the central strip three panels of embroidery have been sewn together with black cotton yarn. The two outer panels are rectangular and are approximately 80 mm wide and 305 mm long. They have been embroidered with geometric shapes; squares, diamonds, triangles, lines, rectangles, in very fine cross stitch in yellow, green, white, pink and red cotton yarn. On one of the panels the yarn is more red and the other is more pink in colour, suggesting the use of two different yarns or dyes. The bottom panel of embroidery is a square approximately 125 wide and 146 mm long. This square is embroidered with a geometric pattern in very fine cross and associated stitches in red, yellow and green cotton yarn. Over the top of this is a rectangular piece of white cotton textile appliqué with bright pink and green embroidery in triangular shapes forming two patterns in cotton yarn. Attached to the bottom of this flap are eight tassels in green and red silk yarn on white cotton yarn with a silver round plastic bead threaded at the top of each tassel. [FC 08/06/2010]
