Description
Wooden stool. [PR [OPS move] 19/5/2017]
Long description
Carved wooden stool, carved from a single piece of wood. The seat of the stool is roughly circular and flat. The maximum diameter of the seat is 428 mm approximately. The seat is split and has been repaired, the repairs are visible from the underside and side. The top of the seat is stained dark brown. The seat has an approximate maximum depth of 68 mm. The edge of the seat has been carved all around with two rings of crescent shapes. Each ring has thirty-five crescents not including the half or part crescents obscured by the repairs to the split. The upper and lower edges of the side of the seat, and the crescents have been stained dark brown. The base of the stool is ring shaped. The top of the base has been stained dark brown. The outer edge of the base has been decorated in a similar style to the edge of the seat. It has been carved all around with two rings of crescent shapes. Each ring has thirty-five crescents which have all been stained dark brown. Between the seat and the base are three tiers of carving. Each tier has been carved with five human heads. The heads are arranged around the stool facing outwards. All fifteen heads are very similar hand have had their carved features and heads picked out in dark brown staining. On the first tier the heads are carved from the seat base and rest on an undulating wooden tier. On the second layer the heads are carved from the first undulating wooden tier to another undulating wooden tier. On the third layer the heads are carved from the second undulating wooden tier to the base of the stool. The base of the seat, backs of the heads and undulating tiers and of the base are all unstained and undecorated. [MdeA 07/03/2008]
