Research and responses

According to Dr M. O’Hanlon, A.R.M. probably stands for Assistant Resident Magistrate. [CW 23/2/2000] Confirmed by Sylvia Schaffarczyk, a PhD student from the Australian National University, in September 2004 during a visit to research collections made by Australian colonial administrators in Papua New Guinea. [ZM 3/9/2004]

The following details about this object were sent via email to Julia Nicholson by Gaye Sculthorpe (British Museum, Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Head: Oceania Section): "You have this basket listed only as 'Australia' on your database. It is from the Kimberley region of Northwest Western Australia. A similar one is in the collection of the British Museum, Oc1899,-.491, collected by Inspector Ord. The 'Eric Conran' listed as field collector was probably Eric Lewis Conran 1887-1924, who I believe was at one time involved in mining activities in Western Australia, but born in Queensland. He served in World War I and was awarded a Military Cross. Further details about him are here: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/25533180" [FB 15/12/2020]
