Research and responses

Gittinger refers to this type of textile from Nusa Penida as 'kamben': 'The weavers and dyers of the island of Nusa Penida are some of the few in Indonesia who make cotton weft ikat (normally weft ikat is paired with silk yarns, and cotton with warp ikat). .. these sombre cloths were held in great esteem by the Balinese, and were used as garments for royal audiences and temple decorations.'
