Long description
Neck piece. The neck piece is made from two bands of indigo dyed cotton textile approximately 20 mm wide and 15 mm wide hand stitched together. One of the bands of textile is embroidered with a geometric pattern in red, white, green and orange cotton yarn. The other is decorated with a woven length of braid woven in white silk with flowers in red, pink and green. The edges are stitched with red, green and purple cotton. These are decorated with beaten circular silver metal discs. At either end of the neck piece are stitched squares of indigo dyed cotton textile. Two of these are embroidered with geometric patterns in satin stitch and cross stitch in orange, green, white and purple cotton yarn. The other two panels at the other end are embroidered with geometric patterns in minute cross stitch and satin stitch in maroon, blue, white, yellow, green and purple with three beaten metal discs and three smaller metal disc from which jingles are attached to a chain. Cowrie shells arranged in floral designs are stitched on top of the embroidered panel. [FB 12/09/2012]
