Long description
Kachina consisting of one kachina figure on the back of another which is standing upright. The head, upper body and legs of both figures are painted reddish brown. Both figures have protruding eyes with the centres painted black. Each figure has a rounded protruberance on either side of the head and one in the centre of the forehead. The standing figure also has a fourth protruberance at the back of its head whilst the figure on its back shows signs of having had this fourth protruberance originally and that it is now missing. The standing figure has a cone shaped horn on the top of its head whilst the figure on its back has a more rounded horn on top of its head. Both figures have beak shaped mouths slightly open and painted black inside. Both figures have black neck ties outlined in white and both have their wrists or lower arms painted black with white spots. Both figues alos have black skirts or kilts and orange and black boots. Both figures hold a rattle in one hand and have a hole in the other hand where a feather would have been fixed and is now missing. The standing figure has a circle painted black in the centre of its upper body filled with white spots. There are remains of feathers attached to the protruberances on both figures. A piece of string has been tied around the neck of the figure on the back. The two figures are carved from one piece of wood. A loose feather was found with this object which may be one that has come out of one of the holes in one the hands of the figures.[MdeA 27/3/2002]
