Research and responses

Note that this object is listed on an insert page [between pages 80 and 81] in vol 1 of the Pitt Rivers Catalogues of the Farnham Museum currently housed in the Cambridge University Library Manuscripts room, the page is headed 'List of Articles to go to Museum' . The object is described as 'Handle of Bronze Roman Sword found nr Matrey Tyrol'. Pitt Rivers was in Austria in July, August and September 1882 according to vol 1. Note that there is an entry in the 'Green book' for two 'bronze daggers forgeries'. These cannot be matched at the present time as there is insufficient information but no daggers are currently identifed as being reproductions. Any of the bronze daggers in the existing catalogue may therefore be reproductions [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]
