Long description
Hunting knife, single-edged. With two wide grooves along the back, perforated with holes of different shapes; ivory handle elaborately carved with floral motifs, buildings and human and animal figures including a shepherd and sheep. [LM 02/04/2007]

This object is mentioned in 'Primitive Warfare' page 35 'Plate VI fig 87b A coteau-de-chasse having two grooves on each side near the back of the blade, which is pierced through with holes - Colonel Lane Fox's collection'. [AP Leverhulme project on founding collection 1995-1998]

Information from Andrew Mills: the perforations in the blade are probably to make it lighter, rather than having to do with letting air into wounds. [LM 03/04/2007]
