- Sword with curved, pointed and engraved metal blade and leather bound grip. [JMC 20/6/2018]
- Long description
- Sword with elaborately curved blade and leather bound grip. The blade, possibly of iron, extends from the handle in a thin, rectangular section before curving in an S-shape and terminating in three points. The cutting edge is on the outer curve. At the point where the blade starts to curve is a straight, right-angled projection with a pointed lozengiform terminal. The lower portion of the blade and the projection are engraved on both faces with grooves and chevrons and cross-hatched lozenges, from the points of which extend grooves terminating in tiny crescents. At the top of the blade near the three points, on each face, is a further engraved lozenge with grooves and crescents. The handle appears to be formed from the bottom of the blade being bound with leather. This has then been bound with leather in a chequered pattern, with strips of raw hide at the top and bottom. At the top of the grip is a leather fringe and at the bottom is a strap of twisted leather. The portion of blade from where the projection is extends is also bound with leather and raw hide, with two leather strips cut at the edges to form fringes. [JMC 20/6/2018]
