The Museum of Eastern Art came into being in 1949 when the Chinese ceramics collection and the Indian collections of the Ashmolean Museum were amalgamated to form the Museum of Eastern Art, which was located in the Indian Institute. In 1962 the collections were moved back to the Ashmolean, and the Museum of Eastern Art ceased to exist, it became the Department of Eastern Art within the Ashmolean. [El.B 22/08/2011]
