Research and responses

In 1894 Flinders Petrie founded an organisation known as the Egyptian Research Account to support archaeological fieldwork in Egypt; in 1905, this became the British School of Archaeology in Egypt (BSAE), which sponsored work by Brunton and Petrie at Qau [RTS 18/1/2005].

The jar is made from calcite, sometimes known as 'Egyptian alabaster'; there are kohl residues inside. The markings on the two objects indicate their provenance - tomb 1053, and a surface find from cemetery 600 (in keeping with practices at other sites excavated under the auspices of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt, '600' probably refers to surface material recovered from the '600' cemetery rather than a specific tomb). '23' refers to the year they were found (1923; this season ran from 1st December 1922 to 4th April 1923 - G. Brunton 1927, Qau and Badari I, p. 1). As the lid and jar come from different contexts, they cannot belong to one another, and the lid should be checked to see if it fits either 1923.43.63 or 64, which also come from '600' [RTS 4/6/2004].
