Several of the paintings have the initials MO RN after Carter's initials, referring to his having been a Medical Officer in the Royal Navy. According to Navy records this means that he is likely to have been William Foster Carter, whose Navy service began in 1828, or possibly William Francis Carter, whose service began in 1808.
