Research and responses

Several of the paintings have the initials MO RN after Carter's initials, referring to his having been a Medical Officer in the Royal Navy. According to Navy records this means that he is likely to have been William Foster Carter, whose Navy service began in 1828, or possibly William Francis Carter, whose service began in 1808. See service records in Related Document File. [CM 06/01/2011]

Caption: 'A fisherman from Chile on a raft made of inflated bullock hides. The Seringapatam spent the early years of 1830 and much of 1831 and 1832 sailing up and down the coast of Chile. Conception Bay was visited in October 1830, and Carter probably made an excursion to Santiago during one of the many times the Seringapatam was anchored at Valparaiso.' [JC 17 10 2014]
