Long description
Sword [.1] with bone hilt and wooden sheath [.2] with carrying loop, part of which is detatched [.3] and tassel [.4]. The sword has a slightly curved single edged blade. The inscription "TO H L CHITTENDEN, FROM. PANCERAN [sic]. MANCHKOE. NECORO. KOETEI" is inlaid in copper alloy or gold. The hilt is made of bone and elaborately carved with trimmed dyed goat hair ornamentation in red, white and black. The grip is bound with plaited ?copper alloy wire. The sheath is elaborately carved along its length. It is bound at several points along its length with cane and rattan. The back of the sheath has another smaller sheath made from a piece of folded wood, bound in hide and bound onto the main sheath with cane. This is decorated with trimmed goat hair and a goat hair tassel that is dyed red, black and white. A large tassel of seed beads, mostly black with some pink, yellow and blue hangs from this smaller sheath. The cane carrying loop is attached through the smaller sheath. It is made of plaited cane and rattan. The two ends of the loop are attached with a metal bar and bolt. A tassel is looped around the carrying loop. It comprises a length of black rope with a carved hornbill beak and casque and three tassels of seed beads of similar style to the one attached to the sheath. [SM 17/05/2007]
