Long description
Fan of woven palm leaf strips with a decorative border of black dyed palm leaf and a wooden handle. The bottom half of the handle has been carved to have a square cross section and has an incised ring at the top end. The upper half of the handle has been smoothed and rounded at is bound at the head by plaited animal hair which secures the palm leaf strips into position. This cord of animal hair has come loose at the bottom and slightly unwound. The plaited form of the hair is clearly visible here as is its knotted end. The fan is roughly triangular in shape with the point at the top and the bottom corners slightly rounded. The outer 30 mm of the fan has been closely woven into a regular close weave.
