Research and responses

This object is from the site of Tell Jemmeh, excavated by Sir William Flinders Petrie in 1926/1927, which he erroneously identified with the biblical site of Gerar (Petrie 1928, Gerar). This project was was sponsored by the BSAE (British School of Archaeology in Egypt), an organisation largely run by Petrie and his wife. The context given should be read as area BM, level 197' (e.g. 197 feet above sea level) [RTS 7/11/2003].

Between 2005 - 2007 a survey of metalwork in the PRM was undertaken by Gali Beiner, a conservator in the Museum. As part of this study 77 objects were analysed using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) providing a qualitative non destructive analysis of the alloy composition. This object was one of those analysed, the results showed the presence of Cu (copper). A copy of the analysis and report is held in conservation [GB 23/8/2007; MN 27/10/2009]
