Senna is any of several plants, especially of the genus Cassia, in the pea family (Fabaceae). Many are used medicinally. Alexandrian senna (C. acutifolia), from Egypt, The Sudan, and Nigeria, are cultivated in India for their cathartica (purifying) properties [Encyclopædia Britannica Online]. [CF 6/3/2000]
