It is not known how Jenness acquired this piece as he is not known to have visited Papua New Guinea until 1911. It is, however, possible that he acquired it from his brother-in-law, the Reverend Andrew Ballantyne who was a Methodist missionary based at Bwaidoga in the south-east of Goodenough Island.
