Description
Vase; fluted or corsetted French 75mm artillery shell. [LM 11/01/2006]
Long description
Vase; fluted or corsetted French 75mm artillery shell. One of a pair of vases made from French 75mm artillery shells. The vase is described by the vendor as being fluted or corsetted. The main body of the shell has been gathered inwards in folds around the shell by an unknown method. Both this and its pair (1999.45.10) appear to be made from shells made in 1917. However, the workmanship on the vases is very different and they were possibly made by two different people. The workmanship on .10 is not as fine as that of .9. They were probably made in France or Belgium. [MdeA 12/1/2000] The following code is stamped into the base of the shell 'SC 636 I 17 K 75 DL C'. Incised lines and numbers are visible around the shell, which appear to be measurement markings to aid in its the formation of the 'fluted' shape. [JFK 3/4/2009]
