- Description
- Pua Kumbu, traditional ikat textile.
- Long description
- Pua kumbu, a rectangular silk cloth made up of two lengths of cloth hand stitched together down the centre. In the central section the warp ikat forms complex interlocking geometric patterns in orange, reddish-brown, cream and blue grey. There is a border of orange, cream and blue grey stripes along each selvedge. There is a narrow band of supplementary weft twining in cream and blue grey and a fringe at both ends. The fringe is made up of twisted tassels which are knotted at the ends. Most pua kumbu are traditionally woven on back-strap looms by women using hand spun cotton and naural dyes. In this case the cloth is 100% silk which has been coloured with Engkudu roots (morinda citrifolia) dye.
