Description
Cylindrical basket made from dried pandanus leaves interwoven with cowrie shells. This is a traditional handicraft of Kiribati. See 2023.30.1.2 for the matching lid.
Long description
Cylindrical basket made from coiled pandanus leaves, decorated with cowrie shells knotted together using thin strips of pandanus leaf. There are two bands of shell decoration. On the lower band the shells are all positioned with the ventral face outwards so that the aperture is visible. On the upper band the shells are rotated so that the dorsal face is outwards.

Research and responses

Made up of sea shells interwoven by dried pandanus leaves, and a combination of thin transparent plastics. Star shapes and flower shapes are used for decorations, but the point of each shape plays an important role to connect all parts of the shapes that are to make it intact.
