'The Protectorate force quitted Benin on the 15th inst. [March 1897], leaving four officers and 100 soldiers as garrison. Mr. Turner is the British Resident, Captain Roupell commands the troops. Colonel Hamilton, Major Landon, Captain Walker, and Lieutenant O'Shea, Special Service officers, embarked on the Bakana [of the British and Africa Steam Navigation Company], for Liverpool, on the 20th [March 1897], at Forcados.'
