Research and responses

This photograph was likely taken on 19 February 1897: 'A reconnaissance in force was made this morning to find the river which supplies Benin [City] with water. [...] We found a small river, about 2 miles off, with excellent water & have now an abundant supply.' (Source: Pitt Rivers Museum, 2019.32.2, page 59, diary entry of 19 February 1897.)
