Long description
One of a pair of ornately carved wooden slipper stirrups. The foot rest is hollowed out and ornately carved all over with rosette and geometrical designs. There is an iron band around the stirrup with incised decoration on both sides which holds the wooden slipper and has a bar where the leather would attach. The band is attached to the base of the stirrup with two rivets. For the other stirrup see [1900.30.96 .2] [EH [OPS Move] 5/4/2017]

Research and responses

According to Francisca Santana-Sagredo, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, this object is not a toy, as it was previously catalogued. These types of stirrups are common in rural areas of Chile but, today, are made of decorated leather rather than wood [MC 2022].
