- Research and responses
Please note that these items are discussed in the Rolleston correspondence, Rolleston papers, Ashmolean Museum, in a series of letters from the Earl of Antrim in which he makes clear that he is going the locally acquired objects to Rolleston as a mark of their friendship when Antrim was at Christ Church College around 1871. These items were donated to the OUMNH, then transferred to the Ashmolean in 1886 as part of the reorganization of museums collections, then finally sent by the Ashmolean to us in 1969. Presumably other items from this large donation were retained by the Ashmolean Museum [AP 24/09/2012]
The above information was taken from the Ashmolean Accession Register when I was looking at the Donor Index cards held by the Department of Antiquities. Please note that it is impossible from the description and measurements to determine which object is referred to in the PRM records, as the different records seem to be recorded as having the same Ashmolean accession number, and others seem to have not been assigned a PRM accession number at all. When the objects are retrieved, hopefully it will be obvious from the descriptions above which record should go with which object. The records that relate to the objects listed above are: 1969.34.555, 1969.34.556, 1969.34.557, 1980.30.1, 1980.30.2, 1980.30.3 [L.Ph 23/3/2004]
See Accession book XXVI 48 '1980.30.1 - 3 ... These three pieces are probably unaccessioned remnants of the 1969 Ashmolean Museum transfer, part of the "Irish wooden vessels 1886.5830 - 5835" group. 1886.5830 5832 and 5833 have been accessioned as 1969.34.556 557 558 [sic actually 555, 556, 557 [AP 5/8/99]] for some reason these three were not accessioned ...' See separate entries for 1980.30.1 - 3 [AP 5/8/99]
Additional information about Lord Antrim added from Donor Index card located in the Department of Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum. [L.Ph 23/3/2004]
This object seems to fit in with the part in the Ashmolean accession book as follows: [5833] is a dish or bowl of a pointed oval shape, the outside being rounded following the curve of the inside, both sides somewhat broken and the whole worm eaten. Length 20 1/4 inches. Width 11 1/4 inches. [GB 20/9/2005]
