- Long description
- Canoe [1.], made of a single piece of birch bark [see entries 1886.1.864.1-.5]. The outside of the canoe is made from a single piece of birch bark. It has been shaped by cutting slits into the bark and stitching it together with strips of wood. These areas have then been covered with a strip of bark and ?resin has been applied over the top. A wooden frame has been attached to the top of the boat with strips of wood and then another frame has been attached to this with nails. This top section has been painted black. An iron strip is nailed to both ends and another iron support has been screwed to the wooden frame at one end. Inside the boat is made from lengthways wooden slats that have been painted a light colour and widthways wooden supports painted black. The canoe has five internal widthways supports. Two of these [see entries 1886.1.864.2-.3] are now detached. The supports were connected to the canoe with mortise and tenon joints and then were tied with wood strips. The central supports have leather nailed around them. [SM (Verve) 26/06/2013]
