- Research and responses
Verney served on Grappler 1862-65 along BC coast so could have field collected this; see http://www.pdavis.nl/Verney.php [Laura Peers, 07/09/2007]
False embroidery in grass-stems. Lid pellets are probably lead shot. [?LM]
This is a 'something-inside-basket'. (Paul 1944:38).
Teri Rofkar (Tlingit Tribe) and Luba Dovgan-Nurse examined this object during a research visit in November 2011. They made the following comments: This basket is probably from the Sitka area. The side of the lid has stripes with corresponding stripes on the bottom part of the basket. The brown dye is obtained from hemlock bark, the orangey brown from the inner bark of the alder. The dark brown parts are not dyed at all, but made using Maidenhead Fern. The rattling noise is produced by seeds. [El.B 22/11/2011]
