Large silver chatelaine with a variety of large silver charms. Two horizontal bars, hinged together on one side and opened by unscrewing at the other. Two bird figures sat facing each other on the corners of the top bar. [ILL [OPS move] 31/10/2017] The charms include pomegranates, crescent moon, hands, cylinders, fish, keys, leg, blue grass block in silver mounts, circular plaque, tambourines, ladles. [ZM 23/6/2004] One of the charms is an arm with a hand making the MANO IN FICA gesture against the Evil Eye. [ZM 25/6/2004]

This object is listed in Volume 16 of the Wellcome Collection Accessions register with the following description: 28th January 1937 R. 507. Charm ornament. Silver. Two loops fitting with screw to engraved handled decorated with two birds; 39 charms are attached, to ensure abundance of the object they represent and to display the wealth of the owner. The charms are fruits, fishes, keys, tambours, birds, etc. 8” x 7¼”. Brazil, South America. Obtained from Mr Stow for £6.
