Research and responses

Note that the two entries give a different purchase date. The entry in the Balfour book quite clearly says the 14.5.1912. Either the 14 on the catalogue card was mistakenly interpreted as 19, or one of the dates was written down incorrectly in the accession & card entries. [CF 19/12/2000]

Presumably purchased by Balfour at the sale of Leitner's collection held by J. C. Stevens in Woking on 14 May 1912; see The Oriental Museum Formed by the Late D. G. W. Leitner, Woking, Tuesday, May 14th, 1912 [catalogue of a sale held by J. C. Stevens in Woking on 14 May 1912] (London: J. C. Stevens, 1912). The 'Indian Musical Instruments' are listed as lots 239 to 256 on pages 18 and 19. (Copy of relevant pages in RDF for 1938.34.228.) [JC 8 11 2019]
