Long description: Pair of morris dancers bell pads. The 12 stamped brass bells are attached to a piece of leather. The dyed red leather has four vertical slits. The three central strips each have four bells. The edge of the leather is decorated with a green ribbon, tied into bows at the centre of each side and corners. The pads have light brown textile ties. Research and responses: Edward VII developed appendicitis shortly before the date the first Coronation had been organised for (26 June 1902), the Coronation was delayed by nearly two months, finally being held on 9 August 1902 [AP 20/09/2006]
I think this must be T.J. Carter [probably Thomas J. Carter] rather than F.J. Carter as TJ Carter was heavily involved in Headington Morris with Cecil Sharp, see biographies file for further detail [AP 14/12/2006]
Examined by Mike Heaney 25 February 2008 (a morris dancer and researcher on the subject). He identified these as part of a set of six made for a performance by Headington Quarry Morris Dancers at the Coronation of Edward VII. The Coronation was delayed so the dances did not happen. In the Museum collections are four of the six sets, see 1903.57.1 .1-.2, 1917.53.468 .1-.2, 1945.11.65 .1-.2 and 2008.59.1 .1-.2. [ZM 26/02/2008]
