Description
Man's long knitted hat
Long description
Man's long knitted hat, narrowing towards the top. Circular knitting on straight needles. Mainly in stocking stitch, with knitted edging (garter stitch and scalloping) around the bottom and red tassel at the top. Alternate red and black horizontal bands, with polychrome motifs of men, women, birds, animals, butterflies, flowers, geometric motifs. All motifs probably have meaning (cf. Meisch 1997:140, cat. no. 235, Davies & Fini 1994:60-61). Sheep's wool, synthetic dyes. C.f. examples illustrated by Meisch (1997:138-9, cat. no. 234) and Davies & Fini (1994:87). Hats of this colour scheme are worn by married men. By tradition the men and boys of Taquile knit their own chullos and this style of knitted cap without earflaps is exclusive to the island (Davies & Fini 1994: 87, 70). Yarn spin Z2S; gage 16 spi (7/cm).

Research and responses

For a list of the works consulted by Linda Mowat while cataloguing this collection, see RDF. [JC 26 8 2013]

This hat was studied by Robin Woodhouse on 22 August 2013. He noted this technique is in a modern knitting style. This is the hat of a married man. On the island only men knit. [MJD (Verve) 28/2/2017]
