Description
Woman's rectangular shawl
Long description
Woman's rectangular shawl made from a complete textile with all four selvages present. Terminal area towards one end. Warp faced plain weave. Brown ground with narrow plain warp stripes in blue, pink, red, green, black and white, and broader bands of complementary warp patterning ('pebble weave') in white, red and blue. Diamond and other geometric motifs. The warps of the brown ground alternate in their direction of spin, giving a subtle textured effect (cf 1997.2.37). The use of lluq'i (backward spun) yarn has a protective function in some areas (Meisch 1986:249-250). Probably alpaca. Warp spin Z2S, S2Z; complementary warp Z2S; weft Z2S; warp count 56 epi (22/cm); weft count 15 ppi (7/cm).
