Sounds very similar to a hat at the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge; the hat there is a Melanau hat, known as terindak matu, made of cane, rattan leaf and nipa leaves, with black and red overlay and the leaves between the layers. [CW 17 9 1997]
