Description
Pair of moccasins
Long description
Pair of moccasins. The colours of the beads are white, royal blue (almost navy but not quite), red, sky blue, greasy yellow, orange, forest green and gold. The green and gold ones are not standard opaque beads, they appear to be clear with an inner tube of colour. The size is that of ordinary seed beads, not big and not small. The moccasins are a made of commercially tanned hide, possibly deer? It is too thin to be cow. They are stitched with cotton or linen thread, of quilting weight. It appears waxed and stiff where bits stick out from knots, like a lightweight artificial sinew. The insides of the soles have parfleche design, painted. [El.B 11/01/2012]

Research and responses

Laura Peers examined these moccasins in December 2011 and made the following notes: The moccasins have been worn, there is an impression of a foot on the sole.

The party of Ogala Sioux attended Bertram Mills Circus. The circus opened in London at Olympia on Monday 21 December 1925 and ended on Saturday 23 January 1926. According to Turvey the band left for Germany on 24 January 1926. [MJD 18/12/2014]
