John Batchelor arrived on Hokkaido on 1 May 1877 and lived in Japan until he retired to England in 1942. He worked with the Ainu from 1878. He left twice, once on a trip to England and the second trip left him stranded in Australia during WWI. He died in England in 1944 at the age of 91. [MJD DDF Body Arts Project 2010/2011 21/01/2011]
