Long description
Roach, or headdress, part of an outfit made in an Eastern Woodlands style. The roach comprises a long and narrow base of dark brown felt, around the edges of which porcupine hair, and other animal hair dyed red, has been tied. The thick felt base comprises felt strips which have been coiled into compact concentric circles. A long leather thong is threaded through a hole in the base. Attached to the end of this is a rosette consisting of a circular piece of leather on a forked ribbon-shaped plate of metal, through a hole in which one blue and one red felt ribbon are tied. Also attached to the underside of the rosette is a short tube of bone or horn and a metal spike. For the rest of the outfit see headband [2017.103.50 .2], breechcloth [2017.103.50 .3], bustle [2017.103.50 .4], leggings [2017.103.50 .5 - .6], belt [2017.103.50 .7], silver trade brooches [2017.103.50 .8 - .10] and necklace [2017.103.50 .11].
