- Long description
- One of a pair of large snowshoes with a wooden frame and rawhide lacings. The snow shoe is of the 'Ojibwe' design, having a lenticular frame with a cusped and prominently upturned nose and a pointed trailer. The frame is formed of two square-sectioned strips of wood, which are riveted together at the nose and trailer, and two crossbars. The central area, between the two cross beams, is filled with a lattice of thick, rawhide strips in a large hexagonal weave, with the strips looped around the wooden frame to hold it in place. The two areas between the cross beams and the nose and trailer are filled with a finer lattice of rawhide in a smaller hexagonal weave, with the strips laced through perforations in the wooden frame. For the other in the pair see [2017.103.33 .1]. [JMC 22/2/2019]

This object is part of a collection put together by English Hobbyist Raymond Wilkes. The collection combines English, European or North American-made hobbyist material, some objects made by Wilkes himself, and some Native American-made objects. The pair of snow shoes was manufactured by the Chestnut Canoe Company for use by settlers and indigenous people. The company closed down in 1979. [JMC 21/2/2019]
